Justin Guarini, the American Idol runner-up most recently seen on Broadway in the new musical In Transit, will join Tony nominee Beth Malone in the Muny’s production of The Unsinkable Molly Brown, which will play the St. Louis venue July 21–27.
Guarini, according to a production spokesperson, will play the role of Vincenzo opposite Malone's Molly. The cast will also feature Tony nominee Marc Kudisch as J.J. Brown, Paolo Montalban as Arthur, and Whitney Bashor as Julia.
Malone previously played the title role in September 2014 for The Denver Center Theatre Company. Press notes for that production describe the musical as such: “Rooted in extensive research of the turbulent Gold Rush era, Colorado’s most treasured rags-to-riches romance traces Molly’s rise from a small-town tomboy to a member of Denver’s high society. The core of this musical comedy is the tempestuous can't-live-with him/can't-live-without him love story that survives the Silver Boom, the Gold Rush, and the R.M.S. Titanic.” Songs from the classic score include “I Ain’t Down Yet,” “Belly Up To The Bar Boys,” “Colorado, My Home,” and “I’ll Never Say No.”
The late Tammy Grimes created the role of Molly in the 1960 Broadway production, earning a Tony for her performance; the late Debbie Reynolds was nominated for an Academy Award for her work as Molly in the 1964 film.
Single tickets will go on sale beginning May 8. For more information, visit Muny.org.
