News Karen Akers Brings “Theatre Songs” to Several Cities This Summer After she completes her month-and-a-half long run at the Algonquin’s Oak Room (May 24), Karen Akers will bring her acclaimed collection of “Theatre Songs” to several venues this summer.

The statuesque performer who starred on Broadway in the original production of Nine will perform at Cabaret at Odette’s in New Hope, PA, June 20-29. In July Akers will offer shows at Stockbridge’s DeSisto School (July 3-5), White Lake’s Bradstan Country Inn (July 6) and at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center (July 26). Akers’ current show features three songs from Nine, which garnered the singer-actress a 1982 Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. In addition to the tunes she performed in that musical — “My Husband Makes Movies” and “Be On Your Own” — Akers also offers Nine’s “Unusual Way” in her new program. Her evening also features tunes from Chess, Baby, Closer Than Ever, Applause, Grand Hotel, West Side Story and Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris.

In addition to her work in the Tommy Tune production of Nine, Akers also starred on Broadway in another Tune-directed musical, Grand Hotel. Her feature film credits include "The Purple Rose of Cairo," "Heartburn" and "Vibes," and she was seen in an episode of the hit TV series "Cheers." It's been the concert/cabaret stage, however, where Akers has garnered the most acclaim, performing in choice venues throughout the United States and Europe. Her seven solo recordings — including her most recent, "Feels Like Home" — are available on CD.
