Twelve-time MAC Award winner Karen Mason will appear at the Manhattan nightspot Don’t Tell Mama every Sunday and Monday in May in support of her latest CD, It’s About Time.
The gig marks a special homecoming for the Drama Desk-nominated actor, who was seen in the original Broadway cast of the musical Mamma Mia! (Drama Desk Award), and who helped open the club 35 years ago.
In addition to selections from early in her nightclub career, Mason is promising to sing rare songs from her Broadway debut in Sing Me a Country Song, the Tony Award-winning play Torch Song Trilogy, and the long-delayed Broadway-bound musical Rebecca.. The Don’t Tell Mama show is directed by Barry Kleinbort with Christopher Denny serving as music supervisor. It’s About Time is available via iTunes, Amazon, and KarenMason.com.
Mason told Playbill, “I love going back to Don’t Tell Mama, a club I helped open back in 1983, because it feels like going home…to a favorite place you knew as as a kid! That is still standing!! The cabaret itself is a sweet, intimate room. and so much life has happened over these years.... It is really great to be in a place where all I have to do is to make and share music with my friends! This is when going home is really good!!”
All the new concerts will begin at 7 PM at Don’t Tell Mama, which is located at 343 West 46th Street in Manhattan. Tickets cost $20 with an additional two-drink minimum (cash only). Tickets can be ordered at Donttellmama.com or by calling (212) 757-0788 after 4 PM.
The album’s title track was written by Paul Rolnick and Shelly Markham for a wedding of Mason’s friends after Marriage Equality legalized in New York State. “I was thrilled to be asked to sing at their beautiful day and told my husband Paul Rolnick, he should write this custom song for the happy couple. It continues to inspire me because I still feel the power of love and truth! It’s about time for us all to stand up for what we believe.”
A special highlight of the disc is the debut pop recording of the song “Finding Wonderland” from Mason’s stint in the 2011 musical Wonderland by Frank Wildhorn and Jack Murphy, Mason’s most recent appearance on Broadway. “It’s a wonderful song,” Mason said, “and it brings back great memories of performing in the show. This number is about finding ourselves and finding our truths, which fits in beautifully with the album’s themes.”
Other songs on the disc include “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?,” “A House Is Not a Home,” “Over the Rainbow,” and “The Man That Got Away.”

Among her upcoming concerts, Mason will appear as part of the 4th Chicago Cabaret Convention April at Park West, and will perform selections from It’s About Time in Chicago (Davenport’s — May 17 and 20) and New Hope, Pennsylvania (The RRazz Room — June 10).
Mason has been a special guest performer on two of Playbill’s Broadway on the High Seas cruises.
