Sketch comedian and television star Keegan-Michael Key, who returned to the stage this past summer in Hamlet after a 19-year screen detour, is now making his Broadway debut in Steve Martin’s Meteor Shower.
The show also stars Amy Schumer in her Broadway debut, Tony winner Laura Benanti, and Tony nominee Jeremy Shamos. “They're both these journeymen, solid performers. They're the ringers. Amy and I are just like, ’Downstage, where?’”
“Amy, being a stand-up, and me being a sketch person and an improviser, we’re so used to performing with an audience that’s interacting with us and talking back to us. Every now and again something will happen in the audience, and someone will say something, and it’s like chum in the water,” Key told late-night host Jimmy Fallon. “There’s times where we’re holding hands, and you'll hear someone and it’s, ‘Don’t don’t don’t don’t. We in a play girl! Don’t do it!’”
Still, Key and Schumer bring a sense of improv to the show and make subtle changes each night: “We try to say all the same lines all the time, but we’ll stick little physical bits in there—just for each other.”
