On Thursday, Oct. 17, 1,250 New York City public school children will be treated to a seminar/performance by Lou Diamond Philips and Donna Murphy, the king and she of The King And I.
The seminar, titled "Creating The Magic," is part of Midtown Management Group's "Inside Broadway" series.
Philips and Murphy will join seven other King And I cast members at the Neil Simon Theatre on West 52nd Street, to sing "Something Wonderful," "A Puzzlement," "Whistle A Happy Tune" and other Rodgers & Hammerstein King songs, while the kids also get a demonstration of scenery changes, lighting and sound.
Midtown Management Group is a 14-year-old, non-profit theatre education company. Recent seminars have covered Phantom Of The Opera, Miss Saigon and Beauty And The Beast.
Michael Presser, executive director of MMG, notes that the Inside Broadway series, "[teaches] children how the theatre uses scenery, lighting, sound, costumes and music to tell a story... Development of young audiences for the theatre is crucial to the future of Broadway, and these types of programs have a far reaching effect."
