Kinky Boots Sets Preview and Opening Dates at London's Adelphi Theatre | Playbill

News Kinky Boots Sets Preview and Opening Dates at London's Adelphi Theatre Kinky Boots, winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Musical, is to receive its U.K. premiere at the West End's Adelphi Theatre, beginning performances Aug. 21 prior to an official opening Sept. 15.

It will be directed and choreographed, as it was on Broadway, by Jerry Mitchell, who is currently represented in the West End by his production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at the Savoy Theatre.

Featuring a book by Harvey Fierstein and music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, and inspired by a true story and based on the 2005 Miramax film of the same name written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth, Kinky Boots "tells the story of Charlie Price who has reluctantly inherited his father's Northampton shoe factory. Trying to live up to his father's legacy and save the family business from bankruptcy, Charlie finds inspiration in the form of Lola. A fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos, Lola turns out to be the one person who can help Charlie become the man he's meant to be. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair finds that they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible… and discovers that when you change your mind, you can change the world."

In a press statement, Mitchell commented, "I am delighted to see this big-spirited musical arrive in London. Kinky Boots is very close to my heart, and I am really looking forward to staging it here with a British cast." In an interview in the U.K.'s Daily Mail, he stated, "It’s got to be British actors, one of the things we always took a beating on in New York was the accents."

Casting is still to be announced.

Producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig added, "We are thrilled and deeply honoured to be bringing Kinky Boots back home to British shores, where this inspirational story is set.
