In A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center of New York City, according to Rising Phoenix Rep, "an unlikely pair of strangers — a twentysomething foul-mouthed comedienne and a world-weary middle-aged millionaire — are brought together unexpectedly when their cancer-stricken mothers become roommates in the hospital. Together, these two very lost people must negotiate some of life’s heaviest problems — and make some of the world’s more inappropriate jokes — as they learn to laugh through their pain and to lean on each other when all they want to do is run away."

Playwright Feiffer's other works include How to Make Friends and Then Kill Them (Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre), Sidney & Laura and I'm Gonna Pray For You So Hard (LAByrinth Barn Series).

Rising Phoenix Rep has commissioned over two dozen playwrights to write new, full-length plays for the Seventh Street Small Stage, the intimate back room space at Jimmy's No. 43 in the East Village, where the company has mounted award-winning productions of new plays for the past seven years.

Rising Phoenix Rep artistic director Daniel Talbott describes the series as "a place to tap into the raw, inspired, inventive, and pioneering work of the Caffe Cino, where the love of theatre and new plays was joined with a scrappy, do-it-yourself work ethic." All shows are rehearsed for a week and then fully mounted and produced for one night only. The series will recommence in the fall with new plays by Kathleen Warnock, Troy Deutsch, Sarah Shaefer and
Mariah MacCarthy (dates to be announced).

The Seventh Street Small Stage is located at 43 East Seventh Street. Reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling (212) 946-5198. For more information, visit RisingPhoenixRep.org.
