Variety reports that Paul Dano and stage and screen star John C. Reilly will also be part of the cast of the new comedy. Filming, under the direction of Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, will begin in New York next month. Based on Jonathan Ames' novel, the script was penned by Ames and directors Pulcini and Springer Berman.
"The Extra Man," according to the industry paper, casts Kline as "a failed playwright who works as an escort for rich widows on the Upper East Side. He develops a mentor-student relationship with a troubled aspiring playwright (Dano)."
Producers are Likely Story's Anthony Bregman and 3 Arts' Stephanie Davis. Bregman told Variety, "This is a film for our times, these hilarious characters living on the edge of enormous wealth, scrapping for small pieces of the pie. I suspect a lot of people will be able to identify nowadays."
