The St. Tropez-set celebration of being what you are previously won a Best Revival trophy for the 2005 production, and the Best Musical award in the 1984 season in which it opened. This makes it the first show to win three Tonys for three different productions in the top category of Best Musical or Best Revival of a Musical.
The Jerry Herman-Harvey Fierstein tale of a drag queen, his partner and their son’s engagement to an uber-conservative politican’s daughter also won Tonys for Best Actor in a Musical (Douglas Hodge as Albin/Zaza) and Best Director of a Musical (Terry Johnson). This production has also taken home three Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Critics Circle Awards and a Drama League Award.
The original production of La Cage won six Tonys in all, with the 2005 revival taking home two.
The current La Cage is now playing at the Longacre Theatre.
