The event will take place at the Vineyard Theatre. Tina Landau directs. The reading is closed to the public. Miracle Brothers is "about two brothers, one black, one white, on a plantation in 18th century Brazil." The show was commissioned by the Vineyard Theatre and is the first commission from the Kitty Carlisle Hart Musical Theatre Lab, a program begun last year by the Vineyard to support the creation and production of new musicals for the stage.

Childs' Bubbly Black Girl— a semi-autobiographical piece about a young African-American woman who endeavors to navigate the expectations and stereotypes that surround her as she searches for her true identity—had its premiere at Playwrights Horizons in summer 2000. La Chanze starred in the title role. Approving critics called the work refreshing and unusual, as well as socially conscious, and praised La Chanze's infectious central performance. There was talk of a commercial transfer to Broadway or Off-Broadway, but the move never happened.
