The California company began performances of the work July 17 for a run scheduled through Aug. 19 at the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre. Dominique Serrand (The Miser) directs the co-production.
Based on Pierre Marivaux's La Fausse Suivante, Steven Epp adapted the new work in which "a suspicious young heiress disguises herself as a man to learn more about her husband-to-be," as a release states. "When she discovers he is wooing another, she seeks revenge by attempting to seduce the object of his affection."
The cast features J.C. Cutler (as Trivelin), Casey Greig (Lelio), Emily Gunyou (The Countess), Merritt Janson (Chevalier) and The Miser actor Nathan Keepers (Arlequino).
The ensemble also includes University of California, San Diego M.F.A. Acting candidates Dorian Christian Baucum, Michelle Diaz, Liz Elkins, Larry Herron and Brandon D. Taylor.
The Deception design team comprises David Coggins (set), Sonya Berlovitz (costumes), Marcus Dilliard (lighting) and Zachary Humes (sound). Benjamin McGovern serves as production stage manager. La Jolla also currently presents Carmen (through July 22) and continues its season with after the quake (July 24-Aug. 26), The Adding Machine (Sept. 11-Oct. 7), Most Wanted (Oct. 2-Oct. 14), Cry-Baby (Nov. 6-Dec. 16) and The Seven (Feb. 12-March 16, 2008).
