News La Jolla Playhouse Strums World Premiere Julia Jordan-Duncan Sheik Work Guitar The world premiere of Guitar, written by Julia Jordan and featuring the music of Duncan Sheik, will be staged as part of La Jolla Playhouse’s Performance Outreach Project (POP) Tour, starting in January of 2004.

Daisy Walker will direct the production of the new work to tour San Diego communities for bookings through March 2004.

Guitar tells the story of a young girl who is dealing with the loss of her brother. A friend of her late sibling teaches her how the healing power of music can "turn anger into harmony."

Playwright Jordan is enjoying a surge of interest in her work as the prolific pen is enjoying a four-play season of her own at various venues in New York. Her works St. Scarlet played at The Ontological and Summer of the Swans at the Lucille Lortel earlier in the year. Tatjana In Color currently performs at The Culture Project and her Boy opens at Primary Stages in April 2004.

Other works include the librettos for The Mice (with Neil Benjamin and Batboy's Larry O'Keefe) — which appeared as part of Prince Music Theatre's production of 3hree — and Sarah Plain and Tall with the same songwriting team.

Composer Sheik, known for his pop song "Barely Breathing," has created original compositions for the Public Theatre's 2002 Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night and has two new musicals in the works: Spring Awakening — originally workshopped at the Playhouse in 1999 — under consideration for the Roundabout Theatre Company— and The Nightingale Past Playhouse POP Tour commissions have included Hilly Hicks, Jr.'s The Breeze, the Gust, the Gale and the Wind, Luis Alfaro's Ladybird: The Life and Times of a Roller Derby Queen, Ralph Lee's Origin of Corn, Karen Hartman's Alice's Wild Ride, Melanie Marnich's The Flimflam Man and José Rivera's Maricela de la Luz Lights the World.
