The La Jolla Summerfest in San Diego opens tonight with the California premiere of Lalo Shifrin's Letters From Argentina.

The tango, which was co-commissioned by the festival, is performed by a group featuring the composer at the piano, clarinetist David Shifrin, and violinist and festival director Cho-Liang Lin.

The festival, which runs through August 21, also includes visits from Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, cellist Lynn Harrell, violinist Gil Shaham, pianist Andr_ Watts, violinist Mark O'Conner, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra with violinist and music director Richard Tognetti,

Lin appears several times, performing with O'Conner, the ACO, and Watts.

Contemporary works on the schedule include Christopher Rouse's Second Quartet and Compline and O'Connor's Appalachia Waltz Trio and String Quartet No. 2 ("Bluegrass").
