Commemorating late playwright Williams' 99th birthday, LAB presents the all-day/all-night marathon event March 26-28 at The Cherry Lane Theater's Cherry Pit. Admission is free.
As an announcement explains, "In service to the community, LAByrinth Theater Company will endeavor to do as many readings of Tennessee Williams' work as possible – back to back, from start to finish – on the occasion of his 99th birthday; including plays, screenplays, adaptations, essays, personal letters and interviews." Audience participation will be strongly encouraged: "Show up at any time during the event and sign up to read, or just find a seat and listen to doctors, cab drivers and busboys read alongside LAB Company Members, LAB friends, theater luminaries, students and celebrities."
Participants scheduled to take part include Vanessa Aspillaga, Bob Balaban, Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Leslie Bibb, Ellen Burstyn, Bobby Cannavale, Liza Colón-Zayas, Maggie Flanigan, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Josh Hamilton, Jessica Hecht, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Russell G. Jones, Michael Kelly, Jesse L. Martin, Chris Messina, Ana Ortiz, Piper Perabo, Portia, Adam Rapp, Judy Reyes, Sam Rockwell, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Annabella Sciorra, Richard Schiff, Kyra Sedgwick, John Patrick Shanley, Michael Shannon, Felix Solis, Phyllis Somerville, Paul Sparks, Michael Stuhlbarg, Richard Thomas, Eli Wallach and Yul Vázquez. (All artists subject to availability.)
Among other events to take place include Sunday Brunch Event (where theatre legends recount their experiences working with Williams), a "STELLA!" scream-off competition (on the shore of the Hudson River), raffles, contests, souvenirs and giveaways.
LAB co-artistic director Stephen Adly Guirgis explained the impetus for the celebration: "Speaking strictly for myself, if it hadn't been for Tennessee Williams, I’d probably still be a bike messenger.” He added, "Next year he would have been 100, so why not get the party started early?" The Cherry Lane Theater's Cherry Pit is located at 155 Bank Street. For more information, visit labtheater.org/ tenn99.
