Neil La Bute will no longer be directing his play The Distance From Here at the Almeida. The American playwright is still deeply involved with turning his previous hit at the Almeida - The Shape of Things - into a film that he has bowed out in favour of David Leveaux.
Leveaux directed The Real Thing, which transferred from the Donmar to the Albery before then crossing the Atlantic to New York.
The Distance From Here is an American play with an American cast, about dysfunctional Americans - like This Is Our Youth. There seems to be something more inherently engaging and theatrical about Americans in these situations than Brits, and the Almeida is making a speciality of producing new plays in this genre.
