The LAB show, presented in collaboration with the Public Theater, began performances April 20 and opened May 9 at the Shiva Theater in the downtown venue. Due to audience demand, the run, originally slated through May 30, will now play through June 6. Billed "a modern retelling of Woyzeck," the piece finds a soldier recently returned from the 2003 U.S.-led war in Iraq. LAB co-founder Ortiz (Jesus Hopped the A Train, Where's My Money?) stars as Jose Solo in what is described as a "visceral, violent and visually stunning riff on Buchner's classic."
Ian Belton directs a cast that features Anna in the Tropics star John Ortiz, "Scrubs" nurse Judy Reyes and playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis with Kim Director, Alex Flores, Portia, Robert Glaudini, Jason Manuel Olazábal and Richard Petrocelli.
The design team for Guinea Pig Solo features Andromache Chalfant (scenic), Kaye Voyce (costume), Paul Whitaker (lighting) and Fitz Patton (sound).
LAByrinth Theatre Company is currently in residence at The Public Theater and presented its staging of Robert Glaudini's Dutch Heart of Man earlier this season as well as a workshop production of The Fairy Tale Project by Webb Wilcoxen and their annual Barn Theatre Series readings. Next season will see three world premiere plays: John Patrick Shanley's Sailor's Song, José Rivera's Massacre (Sing to Your Children) and Stephen Adly Guirgis' The Last Days of Judas Iscariot.
