News   Labyrinth to Produce Lucy Thurber's The Insurgents, About Controversial American Figures

Labyrinth Theater Company has announced that Jackson Gay will direct the New York premiere of Lucy Thurber’s The Insurgents at the Bank Street Theatre in February.

The premiere follows Thurber’s Obie Award-winning The Hill Town Plays, a five-play cycle that played Off-Broadway last year. The Insurgents is inspired by the lives of some of the most dynamic and controversial figures in American history: Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner, John Brown and Timothy McVeigh. "The play examines the lies and injustice that history has handed down and the actions people take when they finally decide that enough is enough," according to the Labyrinth.

The production will mark the third occasion that director Gay and playwright Thurber have collaborated together Off-Broadway. The Insurgents will run Feb. 5-March 8, 2015, at the Bank Street Theater.

Casting and the creative team for The Insurgents will be announced at a later date.

The Insurgents was previously produced at the 2011 Contemporary American Theatre Festival. Lucy Thurber is the author of ten plays; her work has been produced Off-Broadway by Rattlestick Playwright’s Theater, The Atlantic Theater Company and Cherry Lane Theater, among others. She is also the recipient of the Manhattan Theatre Club Playwriting Fellowship.

An intimate Conversation Series will accompany select performances of The Insurgents. Participants include journalist Chris Hedges; activist, writer and public speaker Kevin Powell; playwright Dominique Morisseau; and John Brown scholar and author Lou DeCaro Jr., among others, who will join the creative team and Labyrinth Theater Company staff for select pre- and post-show talks. A full schedule will be announced at a later date. The Conversation Series includes a complimentary beer with each ticket purchased and is sponsored by Lagunitas Brewing Company.  Tickets, priced $25, will go on sale in early January. They can be purchased by visiting labtheater.org or by calling (212) 513-1080. The Bank Street Theater is located at 155 Bank Street in Manhattan.
