Essmann, a satirist, actor and writer known to New York's downtown theatre scene, returns to LaMaMa to perform his latest work, The Usual Freak Show. The cabaret-style performance also reunites Essmann with LaChiusa: the composer previously appeared numerous times with Essmann providing songs and background music for his sketches. Essmann's sketches have included an array of characters including Barbie; the French Existentialist slam poet, Jean-Louis DeBris; and the fashion editor Vivyen. His successful work Triplets in Uniform was also seen at LaMaMa.
Michael John LaChiusa has penned the musicals The Wild Party and Marie Christine for Broadway. His body of work also includes Hello Again, See What I Wanna See, Little Fish, Bernarda Alba, The Petrified Prince and First Lady Suite.
The Usual Freak Show will run Nov. 2-18 at La MaMa E.T.C.'s The Club, located at 74A East 4th Street in Manhattan. Tickets are available by calling (212) 475-7710, or by visiting www.lamama.org.
