The Connecticut theatre company, which originally planned to present its 2008-2009 season at the Palace theatre in downtown Stamford, will remain at its current venue, the barn theatre, for the duration of the upcoming season.

LaBute's The Mercy Seat, kicks off the season, running Sept. 17-Oct. 5. STW founder and producing director Steve Karp will direct the work in which "a man finds himself in the downtown apartment of his lover, who also happens to be his boss. The couple explores the choices now available to them in a world that changed overnight."

John Cariani's Almost Maine follows, playing Nov. 5-23, under the direction of Douglas Moser. "In a wonderfully wrought fictional town in Maine, the aurora borealis creates an atmosphere of star-struck love affecting the lives of nine couples," according to press notes.

Looking to the new year, Patricia R. Floyd stages John Patrick Shanley's Defiance, Jan. 28-Feb. 15, 2009. The play, which is set in 1971 at Camp Lejeune, NC, concerns "two U.S. Marine officers, one black and one white, [who] are on a collision course over power, responsibility and an affair with an enlisted man's wife."

Tom Dudzick's comedy Greetings will be presented April 22-May 10, 2009. Karp stages the work about "a young man [who] brings home his Jewish atheist fiancé to meet his very Catholic parents on Christmas Eve. With the inevitable family explosion comes an out-of-left-field miracle that propels the family into a wild exploration of love, religion and truth." The final offering of the Stamford season will be First Lady Suite. Originally slated for presentation during the 2007-2008 season, Stamford will now stage the Michael John LaChiusa chamber musical June 10-28, 2009. Shawn Churchman directs the work that reveals, in song, the inner thoughts of First Ladies Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Kennedy and Mamie Eisenhower.

Tickets and season subscriptions are currently available by phoning (203) 359-4414 or by visiting StamfordTheatreWorks.

Stamford Theatre Works is located at 200 Strawberry Hill Avenue, in Stamford, CT.
