Since its release composer Gordon and the studio cast have become more high-profile than ever, helping to prompt the iTunes release. A live recording of Gordon and Michael Korie's opera The Grapes of Wrath was released by PS Classics in 2008; Richard Nelson and Gordon's musical, My Life With Albertine, is also in the label's catalog. Gordon's settings of the work of Langston Hughes, under the title, "Only Heaven," was also released by PS Classics.
The cast of Dream True includes Broadway's Brian d'Arcy James (currently in Shrek the Musical), Jason Danieley (recently of Curtains), South Pacific's Kelli O'Hara, Jessica Molaskey, Jeff McCarthy and Tony Award winner Victoria Clark (The Light in the Piazza), plus Harrison Chad, William Ullrich, Michael McElroy, James Moye and Clarke Thorell. The orchestra is conducted by Ted Sperling; the orchestrations are by Jonathan Tunick.
Winner of the Richard Rodgers Production Award given by The American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1999, Dream True, inspired by the novel "Peter Ibbetson" by George du Maurier, was originally produced by the Vineyard Theatre in June 1998, then in an extended run in the spring of 1999.
It was subsequently produced in concert on March 8, 2004, at CooperArts, a contemporary music series produced by Howard Stokar; the concert cast and orchestra then went into the recording studio to preserve their performances on disc.
Since Dream True's initial run, several of its songs have been performed frequently on recordings and in concert, including "Finding Home" and "We Will Always Walk Together," said PS Classics' co-founder Tommy Krasker. Krasker told Playbill.com, "Because Dream True was an album of a concert done only once, we brought it out in limited release in the spring of 2006. But since then, Ricky's gone on to Grapes of Wrath, Kelli to South Pacific, Brian to Shrek, Jason to Curtains, Jessica to Sunday in the Park With George, and the album itself just keeps garnering attention. Between the continued visibility of its participants, and the strong reviews the disc itself received, it's been a solid seller — a surprisingly solid seller, I might say. We thought it was time to offer it to the digital market, so that a whole new audience can discover it."
