James Lapine, director and librettist of Sunday in the Park With George and Into the Woods has agreed to direct a Broadway revival of the 1955 drama The Diary of Anne Frank scheduled to open on Broadway in autumn 1997.

No casting has been announced.

It's been more than 50 years since a Dutch Jewish girl named Anne Frank made her last entry in her diary before Nazi police discovered her family's hiding place and dragged her and her family to death in a concentration camp. The story retains its power, and 1997 audiences will get the chance to see if the play does so as well.

David Stone and Amy Nederlander Case will produce the play, co-written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett.

Though a spring opening had been scheduled, Stone told Playbill On-Line that the production won't happen until autumn 1997. The play was filmed in 1959 with Shelley Winters, Joseph Schildkraut, Lou Jacobi and Ed Wynn. A 1980 TV movie starred Melissa Gilbert and Maximilian Schell.
