Gilda's Club, named for comedienne and former Saturday Night Live cast member Gilda Radner, was founded in 1995 to provide a place for people with cancer and their families to meet with others in their situation. Among its free-of-charge services, the Club offers support groups, lectures, workshops and social events.

Radner succumbed to ovarian cancer May 20, 1989. Cabaret singer and Broadway performer Beechman, for whom the theatre is named, died of the same disease March 8, 1998. -- By Christine Ehren
