LOS ANGELES--The Jewel Box Theatre of North Hollywood will kick off its Summer Marathon Run to the Theatre program with eight productions, beginning July 10.
Starting the summer season is Women's Night Out, featuring comediennes and recording artists Michelle Bloom, Jeanne Smith, Casey Williams and Lisa Wyatt. Women's Night Out will be performed at 8 PM July 10 and July 11, and 7 PM July 12. Tickets are $10 and include wine and cheese after the show.
Next up is the West Coast premiere of Resound, an a cappella musical written by Val Dunlap, to be directed and choreographed by Ellen Rooney. The musical comedy centers around a woman's struggle to invent silent Velcro. The show opens July 24 and runs 8 PM Thursday through Saturday, until Aug. 8. Tickets are $10 and include dessert after the performance.
Headgames L.A., run by David Dalton, hits in August with the West Coast branch of his Denver-based improvisers, offering comedy, drama, music and games improvised on the spot. Tickets are $10 and include dessert after the show. The show's open-ended run begins Aug. 2, with performances at 8 PM Sundays.
The Gemstone Players' Director's Showcase will feature directors from the resident company, in an evening of short, original works written by members of the Los Angeles Playwrights Group. The show runs 8 PM Aug. 13-15. Tickets are $6. Los Angeles Playwrights Group also offers a series of Original One-Act Plays, running 8 PM Thursday through Saturday, from August 21 to August 29. Tickets are $10 with dessert after the show.
The Gemstone Players' Annual Shameless Display of Talent, run by Artistic Director Walter Olkewicz, will feature a showcase of scenes. Tickets are $5. The presentation runs at 8 PM September 3-5.
The Children's Theatre, in association with the Jewel Box, will offer regular Saturday performances at 3 PM from July 11 to Aug. 1, presenting The Legends of Pocahontas. Also presented will be Aladdin, running at 3 PM Aug.8-29 Tickets are $6 each. Family discounts are available.
The Jewel Box Theatre was founded by veteran character actor Olkewicz, whose series regular credits have included ABC's hit comedy "Grace Under Fire," "The Last Resort" and "Warriors and Wizards." Film credits include David Lynch's Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.
"I structured the Jewel Box Theatre as home for my vision," said Olkewicz. "This includes a professional resident acting company, a place for other directors and writers with professional credits to call home, to mount their visions and work, as well. We have grown over the last few years and now I feel confident that The Jewel Box will continue to grow and become a staple and driving force within the local theatre community."
