Though former disco diva Vicki Sue Robinson extended her run in the autobiographical Behind the Beat to July 4 at Off-Broadway's Kaufman Theatre, the show ended up closing two weeks early, June 20. Robinson began performances April 30, opening May 9. A production spokesperson called the early shuttering "unexpected." In Beat, Robinson traces her own career from her Broadway debut in Hair and a stint with Jesus Christ Superstar to her diva and drug days at Studio 54 to her present comeback and new recordings. The evening features her hit "Turn the Beat Around" (performed in full "Queen of Disco" garb, including a crown with a twirling disco ball), pop and soul oldies, songs from her newest CD, "Move On," and audience singalongs.
Tickets for Behind the Beat ($40) are available through Telecharge at (212) 239-6200. The Kaufman Theatre is located at 534 West 42nd Street.
