Can't wait for High Society to open at the St. James Mar. 27? Why not check out Cafe Society, a new play by theatre critic and journalist Robert Simonson ("Theatre Week"), ending its run Mar. 16, after opening Feb. 20. In this satire of urban life, Karen decides to cross the "class" line by trading places with the counter girl at the local coffee shop. Bizarre events ensue, involving "fancy coffee dependants, romantic misadventures and assassination."
Other plays by Simonson include Which One's Yours? and Wittenberg.
Directing Cafe Society is Alkis Papoutsis, who directed the aforementioned Wittenberg at Nada. Papoutsis has staged shows at the Pearl Theatre, Pan Asian Rep and Theatre at St. Clements.
Jill Abramovitz, Scott Bowman, Jen Celene Little, Jacqueline Lucid, Ron McClary, Bruce Racond, Douglas Scadron Stone, Bill Van Horn and Leyna J. Weber star in Cafe Society, which plays at Manhattan Playhouse on West 49th St. For tickets ($12) and information call (212) 245-7798.
