The Lightning Thief (Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre). Theatreworks USA presents the new musical The Lightning Thief as part of its 26th annual Free Summer Theatre Program in New York City. Directed by Stephen Brackett and choreographed by Sam Pinkleton, the cast includes Eric Meyers as Percy Jackson, Jordan Stanley as Grover, Graham Stevens as Chiron, Kristin Stokes as Annabeth, Parker Drown as Luke and Zakiya Young as Sally/Clarisse. The Lightning Thief, press notes state, "is the story of Percy, a 12-year-old boy who journeys into a world of mythological monsters and Greek Gods as he struggles with dyslexia and ADHD — as well as coming to terms with a father he has never known — while solving the mystery of Zeus' stolen lightning bolt." Honor Bound (Off-Broadway at St. Luke's Theatre). Albert J. Repicci's dramatic play includes Ross DeGraw, Christine Marie Heath, Anthony Laciura, Justin R.G. Holcomb and Nicole M. Carroll. Here's how the production is billed: "An ambitious young reporter tries to uncover secrets about a respected, retired doctor but instead discovers long buried conflicts between two old friends. Between Riverside and Crazy (Off-Broadway at The Linda Gross Theater). The Atlantic Theater Company's world premiere of Tony nominee Stephen Adly Guirgis' new play Between Riverside And Crazy includes Victor Almanzar, Elizabeth Canavan, Rosal Colón, Liza Colon-Zayas, Tony nominee Stephen McKinley Henderson, Michael Rispoli and Ray Anthony Thomas. "City Hall is demanding more than his signature, the Landlord wants him out, the liquor store is closed — and the Church won't leave him alone," press notes state. "For ex-cop & recent widower Walter 'Pops' Washington and his recently paroled son Junior, when the struggle to hold on to one of the last, great rent-stabilized apartments on Riverside Drive collides with old wounds, sketchy new houseguests, and a final ultimatum, it seems the Old Days are dead and gone — after a lifetime living between Riverside and Crazy." The Off-Broadway production of The Long Shrift, directed by James Franco, features Allie Gallerani, Scott Haze, Brian Lally, Ahna O'Reilly and Ally Sheedy. "The Long Shrift tells the story of Richard Singer, who, as a dorky teenage boy, was accused of rape and thrown in jail, tearing his parents apart," press notes state. Newsies (Broadway at The Nederlander Theatre). The award-winning Broadway musical Newsies currently features Corey Cott as Jack Kelly, John Dossett as Joseph Pulitzer, Liana Hunt as Katherine Plumber, Ben Fankhauser as Davey, Capathia Jenkins as Medda, Andy Richardson as Crutchie and Luca Padovan and Zachary Unger alternating the role of Les. "Set in New York City at the turn of the century," Newsies, press notes state, "is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged 'newsies,' who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys' expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what's right." Bullets Over Broadway (Broadway at the St. James Theatre). The new musical comedy Bullets Over Broadway, written by Woody Allen and based on the screenplay by Allen and Douglas McGrath for the 1994 film of the same name, is directed and choreographed by five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman. The cast features Tony Award nominee Marin Mazzie as leading lady Helen Sinclair, Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominee Zach Braff as playwright David Shayne, Tony Award winner Karen Ziemba as Eden Brent, Brooks Ashmanskas as Warner Purcell, Nick Cordero as Cheech, Betsy Wolfe as Ellen, Lenny Wolpe as Julian Marx, Heléne Yorke as Olive Neal and Vincent Pastore as gangster Nick Valenti. Bullets Over Broadway centers on an aspiring playwright who finds out that his play God of Our Fathers is getting the Broadway treatment thanks to a wealthy gangster who has taken a sudden interest in producing. The only snag is that his dimwitted moll has to star in one of the leading roles.
