A Streetcar Named Desire (Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre). The multi-ethnic revival of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire is led by Golden Globe nominee Blair Underwood ("Sex in the City," "In Treatment") as Stanley, Nicole Ari Parker ("Soul Food," "Boogie Nights") as Blanche DuBois and two-time Tony nominee Daphne Rubin-Vega (Rent, Jack Goes Boating, Anna in the Tropics) as Stella. The creative team was granted permission from the Williams estate to drop the last name of Kowalski, so that Stanley's heritage is now African-American rather than Polish. Freud's Last Session (Off-Broadway at New World Stages Stage 5). Mark St. Germain's Freud's Last Session is an imagined encounter between atheist psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and Christian writer C.S. Lewis. The play "centers on legendary psychoanalyst Dr. Sigmund Freud, who invites the young, rising academic star C. S. Lewis to his home in London. Lewis, expecting to be called on the carpet for satirizing Freud in a recent book, soon realizes Freud has a much more significant agenda," according to production notes. "On the day England enters World War II, Freud and Lewis clash on the existence of God, love, sex, and the meaning of life — only two weeks before Freud chooses to take his own. Not just a powerful debate, this is a profound and deeply touching play about two men who boldly addressed the greatest questions of all time." Angela Lansbury exits Gore Vidal's The Best Man (Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre). Five-time Tony Award winner Angela Lansbury (Mame, Sweeney Todd, Gypsy, Dear World) stars as Sue-Ellen, who has the ear of women voters, in The Best Man. Her final show is Sunday. On July 24, Tony Award winner Elizabeth Ashley (Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, Dividing the Estate, Barefoot in the Park) will succeed Lansbury in the Tony Award-nominated revival about the lead-up to a U.S. presidential election.
