The list, released June 25, includes 135 film artists of various types, from actors to writers, cinematographers to directors (including Adam Shankman, the director of the film of the musical “Hairspray”) and set decorators to visual effects artists, in addition to executives, publicists, and two “at-large” members.
The Academy members are able to vote in the annual Academy Awards, in addition to taking part in the Academy’s film preservation and education programs and events. Many of the actors invited to be members, including Kendrick (“Up in the Air”, Tony nominee for High Society, New York City Opera’s A Little Night Music) and Mulligan (“An Education,” Drama Desk nominee for The Seagull), are recent Oscar nominees or winners.
