Tony Award winner Laura Benanti (Gypsy, She Loves Me) will headline a concert presentation of Melancholy Play, the chamber musical collaboration from Tony-nominated playwright Sarah Ruhl (Eurydice, Dead Man’s Cell Phone) and composer-lyricist Todd Almond (Kansas City Choir Boy, Girlfriend), July 8 at Joe’s Pub.

Benanti starred in the 2009 Broadway production of Ruhl’s In the Next Room, or The Vibrator Play. The production marked Ruhl’s Broadway playwriting debut.

The 7 PM concert will also feature Obie Award winner April Matthis (Iowa, On the Levee) and Amy Warren (The Gabriels). Both Matthis and Warren appeared in the musical’s 2012 world premiere.

Melancholy Play, which was written to be accompanied by a single cellist, was first seen in 2001. Ruhl later approached Almond with the idea of exploring a deeper musical setting for the piece, which gave life to a nearly sung-through chamber musical adaptation.
