The musical, directed and choreographed by Hamilton Tony winner Andy Blankenbuehler, uses an original swing score by Robert Taylor and Richard Oberacker to tell the story of Donny Novitski (Cott), who assembles a band of fellow WWII veterans to enter a national radio contest searching for the next big band sensation. Along the way, he teams up with Julia (Osnes,) a young war widow who becomes the group’s lead singer.
In addition to Cott and Osnes, the cast includes Tony winner Beth Leavel, Alex Bender, Joe Carroll, Brandon James Ellis, James Nathan Hopkins, and Geoff Packard. Rounding out the company are Mary Callanan, Max Clayton, Patrick Connaghan, Matt Cusack, Andrea Dotto, Marc A. Heitzman, Ryan Kasprzak, Andrew Leggieri, Erica Mansfield, Morgan Marcell, Drew McVety, Kevyn Morrow, Jessica Lea Patty, Becca Petersen, Kevin Quillon, Jonathan Shew, Ryan VanDenBoom, Jaime Verazin, Mindy Wallace, and Kevin Worley.
The production features sets by David Korins, costumes by Paloma Young, lighting design by Jeff Croiter, sound design by Nevin Steinberg, and orchestrations by Bill Elliott and music supervisor Greg Anthony Rassen. Fred Lassen serves as musical director; Mark Stuart is the associate choreographer.
Bandstand made its world premiere at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse in 2015 under the title The Bandstand.
