The cast of the Off-Broadway show recorded the album January 11, just a day after the singer’s death. Lazarus, which opened at New York Theatre Workshop December 7, 2015, featured new songs specially composed by Mr. Bowie as well as new arrangements of previously recorded songs—including “Life on Mars,” performed by Sophia Anne Caruso.

The show’s title track, Lazarus, was performed by Michael C. Hall, who starred as the human-looking and lovelorn alien. The same song was also featured on Mr. Bowie’s final album, Black Star—both versions, sung by Hall and Mr. Bowie, are available on the cast album.

Mr. Bowie is also featured in the recordings of “No Plan,” “Killing a Little Time,” and “When I Met You.” The tracks are co-produced by the late artist and Tony Visconti and recorded with Donny McCaslin and his quartet, the same band that played on Mr. Bowie’s Black Star album.

Lazarus was Mr. Bowie’s acclaimed collaboration with Tony-winning playwright Enda Walsh; to the shock of the cast and the world, the singer passed away during its premiere run on January 10. The show, which was directed by Ivo van Hove, enjoyed a successful, extended run Off-Broadway through January 20, 2016. The story was inspired by Walter Tevis' best-selling 1963 novel The Man Who Fell to Earth, about an alien who has been abandoned on the planet.

Along with Hall and Caruso, the cast included Cristin Milioti (Once), Michael Esper, Krystina Alabado (American Idiot), Nicholas Christopher (Whorl Inside A Loop), Lynn Craig (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson), Bobby Moreno (Year of the Rooster), Krista Pioppi (Spring Awakening national tour), Charlie Pollock (The Wild Party), and Brynn Williams (Bye Bye Birdie). The production is set to open in London October 25 at King's Cross Theatre with Hall, Caruso, and Esper reprising their roles.

The Lazarus cast album was produced by the show’s musical director, Henry Hey, and features the same seven-piece house band he assembled for the New York run. The album is being released by ISO/Columbia/RCA Records.
