Tony and Olivier winner Lea Salonga, most recently on Broadway in the Tony-winning revival of Once On This Island, will play Mrs. Lovett in Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group's 2019 production of Sweeney Todd in Manila.
The Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical will play The Theatre at Solarie beginning in October 2019. Salonga will co-star opposite Philippine rock star and musical theatre leading man Jett Pangan (Next to Normal, Nine, Rock of Ages) as Sweeney Todd.
Atlantis Artistic Director Bobby Garcia will direct.
In a statement, Salonga said, “I cannot tell you how excited I am to be cast in one of my favorite Sondheim musicals. It pleases and tickles me to no end that I’m finally old enough to play Mrs. Lovett! She is such a well-written, thoroughly fleshed-out character that’s equal parts drama, comedy, music, and crazy. And I am all about the crazy.”
Atlantis’ 20th anniversary will also include Angels in America: Millennium Approaches in March and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical in June.
