The League of American Theatres and Producers confirms that it has named actor Alan Cumming (Cabaret, Design for Living) as host for the National Broadway Theatre Awards (NBTA). The awards will take place at the Supper Club in New York City on May 21.

In all likelihood, a second host, or co-host will be named for the NBTA event, according to League president Jed Bernstein. Last week, Bernstein told Playbill On-Line that the process of replacing original hosts Henry Winkler and John Ritter involved picking two new stars to anchor the event, not just one. At that time, an offer had been made to one host (presumedly Cumming) and Bernstein suggested that the League might make the announcement of the second host separately.

The NBTA program focuses on Broadway tours by recognizing excellence in theatre outside New York. “Unlike the Tony Awards,” an earlier promotional release read, "voting is conducted by the theatre-going public, who can vote via the Internet or by mailing in ballots distributed in the lobbies of participating theatres around the country." Theatre fans may log on to the NBTA website at www.nationalbroadwayawards.com between now and April 23 to register. Ballots will be emailed. Winners will be announced in New York on May 21.
