The BBC’s non-musical screen adaptation is slated to air in 2018.

Screenwriter Andrew Davies is writing a new screen adaptation of Les Misérables for the BBC, according to the U.K.’s Telegraph. The show is slated to air in 2018 and will contain no songs.

Davies is the writer behind the two hit TV shows House of Cards and War & Peace. As reported in the Telegraph, the screenwriter has called musical adaptations of Les Miz as “shoddy farrago.” This latest version by Davies intends to go back to the basics of the book, and to shed new light on the story of Jean Valjean and Javert as depicted by novelist Victor Hugo.
