When The Exonerated made its world premiere in New York, the cast of the interview-based drama about wrongly convicted death row inmates included Edie Falco, Steve Buscemi, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Richard Dreyfuss, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins. For the West Coast premiere, the Actors' Gang, where Robbins is artistic director, hosts the Jessica Blank-Erick Jensen play April 13-June 2.
Academy Award nominee Bob Balaban (among the cast and creative team of "Gosford Park") is supervising director of the Actors' Gang production. The cast includes Scotty Boyer, Ben Cain, Blaire Chandler, Kelly Cole, Victoria Cunningham, Ken Elliot, Jon Kellam, Richard Lawson, Laurel Olstein, Ken Plamer, Biran Powell, Adele Robbins, Yolanda Snowball, Geronimo Sphinx and Terrell Tilford. Balaban plans to bring The Exonerated back to New York after the L.A. run.
The Exonerated features a half-dozen former death row inmates who have shared a variety of experiences and feelings with playwrights Blank and Jensen. Most describe losing their faith in the justice system, while discovering that it was the resources available to a defense team that made the difference between achieving justice or experiencing a miscarriage of it.
Tickets are $15-$20. The Actors' Gang is located at 6209 Santa Monica Boulevard. For reservations, call (323) 465-0566. The Actors' Gang is on the web at http://www.theactorsgang.com.
