The Barrington Stage Company's production of Hair: The Landmark American Tribal Love Rock Musical in Concert begins performances Aug. 3 at the Mahaiwe in Great Barrington.

Directed by Bill Castellino, Hair will run through Aug. 7 at the Mahaiwe and will then play Aug. 10-17 at the Berkshire Music Hall in Pittsfield, MA. The company will include Dana Steer as Claude, Ryan Link as Berger, Denise Summerford as Sheila, Lori Eve Marinacci as Chrissy, J. D. Goldblatt as Hud, Kelly Lynn Wilson as Jeanie and Jimmi Kilduff as Woof. The Hair Tribe members comprise Negozi Anyanwu, Patrick Carlyle, Inuka Nyota Griggs, Bettina Tyler-Lewis, Charlie Mechling, Lisa Vidas Consolacion, Maurice Emmanuel Parent and Leonard E. Sullivan. The creative team for the musical includes Brian Prather (set design), D. Benjamin Courtney (lighting design), Guy Lee Bailey (costume design) and Dennis J. Arcano (music director). The latter will lead a four-piece rock band.

Hair focuses on a group of hippies — called The Tribe — in New York City in the late 1960's, and gives voice to their passions and frustrations in loose scenes and interactions, including a rant against war, an embrace of free love (including a group nude scene) and odes to nature, life, drugs and multiculturalism. Book and lyrics are by Gerome Ragni and James Rado, music is by Galt MacDermot. Tom O'Horgan was the original director. Heather MacRae, Melba Moore, Keith Carradine and Joe Morton were among performers in the early Broadway run of the show, at the Biltmore Theatre.

Hair will play Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings at 7:30 PM and Saturdays and Sundays at 3 and 7:30 PM. Tickets, priced $20-$40, are available by calling (413) 528-8888. The Barrington Stage Company is located in Sheffield, MA. Visit www.barringtonstageco.org for more information.
