Tony Award and Emmy winner Lillias White, who wraps up her London debut in the new Fats Waller revue This Joint Is Jumpin’ on April 15, will return to a busy schedule of concert and TV appearances in the U.S.
White won the Tony Award for her performance in the 1997 Cy Coleman musical The Life, and has appeared in numerous productions in New York, on the road, and on television, including Chicago, Fela! (Tony nomination), Dreamgirls, Cats, Law & Order, and concert versions of South Pacific and Funny Girl.
Here is her upcoming schedule:
April 16: American Songbook at New Jersey Performing Arts Center This pre-taped concert will be broadcast on PBS stations in the New York area, scheduled for 12:30 PM on THIRTEEN and 3:30 PM on WLIW21. White will join host Michael Feinstein and co-star José James on “Come Rain or Come Shine” from Broadway’s St. Louis Woman, plus “God Bless the Child,” “For Once in My Life,” and other standards. Schedule subject to change.
May 19-20 Night on the Stage: White will perform a benefit concert for the North Carolina theatre troupe Piedmont Players.
Down the road, White is also scheduled to star in a pre-Broadway engagement of the new musical Half Time (formerly Gotta Dance), which is scheduled for a full production at Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey May 31–July 1, 2018. It’s the story of 10 “ordinary seniors with extraordinary dreams who audition to dance at half time for a major basketball team. Only after making the cut do they learn they won’t be dancing tap, salsa or swing—instead, they will bring down the house with a style that is entirely new to them: hip hop.”
Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots) is director and choreographer; Matthew Sklar (The Wedding Singer, Elf) is writing the music; Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde) is supplying the lyrics; Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone) and Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer) are collaborating on the book.
In the meantime, White's fans can catch her co-starring turn as Fat Annie in the Netflix series The Get Down. Created by playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis (The Motherf***er With the Hat) and Baz Luhrmann (La Bohème), the series is set amid the music scene of 1970s The Bronx, New York. Hamilton Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs is also featured on the series.
White has been a special guest performer on two of Playbill’s Broadway on the High Seas cruises. Playbill’s inaugural river cruise along the Rhône River in May 2017 is sold out, but cabins are available for the Rhine River cruise in August 2017, featuring Seth Rudetsky, Andréa Burns, Faith Prince, Terrence Mann, Charlotte d’Amboise, and Santino Fontana. Playbill Travel is now also booking Broadway on the Danube River for November 2017, with celebrity guests to be announced. Visit PlaybillTravel.com for booking and information.
