Playwright Sarah Ruhl (Eurydice, The Clean House, Dead Man's Cell Phone) will make her Broadway debut with her latest work, In the Next Room or the vibrator play, which is scheduled to begin performances Oct. 22 and officially open Nov. 19 at a Shubert theatre to be announced.
Les Waters, who staged the world premiere of In the Next Room at Berkeley Rep this past month, will repeat his duties for the Broadway premiere. The comedy centers on six lonely people seeking intimacy at the dawn of the electric age.
Tony nominated In the Heights director Thomas Kail will direct the Off-Broadway premiere of Nathan Louis Jackson's Broke-ology. The family drama will begin previews at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater Sept. 10 and officially open Oct. 5 Off-Broadway.
According to LCT press notes, Broke-ology "is the story of the King family who have weathered the hardships of life and survived with their love for each other intact. But when two brothers are called home to take care of their ailing father, one of them must choose to follow the life he dreams of or honor the unspoken promise of loyalty to his family."
Kail staged the world premiere of Broke-ology at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in July 2008. The Lincoln Center Theater production reunites much of the creative team, including Donyale Werle (set design), Emily Rebholz (costume design) and Jill DuBoff (sound design). Newly added is lighting designer Jason Lyons.
Casting for both productions will be announced at a later date.
