Listen to Cyndi Lauper Perform Never-Before-Heard Demo of Kinky Boots' "Not My Father's Son" | Playbill

News Listen to Cyndi Lauper Perform Never-Before-Heard Demo of Kinky Boots' "Not My Father's Son" To celebrate Father's Day, Kinky Boots producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig have released a never-before-heard original demo by the show’s Tony and Grammy Award-winning composer, Cyndi Lauper.

The track, which features Lauper singing "Not My Father’s Son," was recorded in 2009 and was among the first songs to be penned for the Tony Award-winning musical.

“At its heart, Kinky Boots is about father/son relationships and the effects (both good and bad) our parents have on us. It’s a subject we can all relate to. Truthfully, do any of us ever outgrow wanting our fathers’ approval?” the show’s writer, Harvey Fierstein, said in a statement.

“Writing ‘Not My Father’s Son’ was particularly personal for me, since I’ve witnessed my own son’s relationship with his dad over the years,” Lauper added. “Watching their interaction definitely provided a lot of inspiration for this song.”

Kinky Boots, according to press notes, "tells the uplifting and heartwarming tale of Charlie Price, a young man reluctantly taking over his family’s struggling business. Charlie meets and finds inspiration in Lola and together, the unlikely pair finds that they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible… and discovers that when you change your mind about someone, you can change your whole world."

The musical is the winner of six 2013 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Kinky Boots features a Tony Award-winning score Lauper, a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein, and direction and choreography by Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell.
