The public broadcaster's flagship Radio 4 channel will air the recordings June 6-8. The BBC will have more than eight hours of air time dedicated to the day across its television output in addition to radio air time.

The original scripts from June 1944 provided the first news that the Allies' offensive against Nazi-occupied mainland Europe had begun.

All the major TV networks in the United Kingdom, including satellite operator BSkyB, commercial network ITV and Channel 4, devoted air time to coverage of the anniversary. More than 20 world leaders gathered in France alongside Britain's Queen Elizabeth II to acknowledge the anniversary.

An Olivier Award winner, Cumberbatch's stage credits include the National Theatre's 2011 production of Frankenstein and 50 Years on Stage. He will star in Hamlet at the Barbican Theatre in August 2015. He stars in the TV show "Sherlock," and his film credits include "August: Osage County," "The Fifth Estate" and "12 Years a Slave."

Tony nominee Patrick Stewart has performed on Broadway in Macbeth, A Christmas Carol, The Caretaker and No Man's Land/Waiting for Godot. The "X-Men" and "Star Trek" star has contributed his vocal talents to "American Dad!" and "Family Guy."
