Steven Sater, the Tony-winning lyricist and book writer of the musical based on the Wedekind play, has confirmed to Playbill.com that a live cast album of Spring Awakening's premiere Swedish production will materialize in the near future. New creative teams have conceived the Scandinavian productions that do not utilize the Broadway designs and choreography.
Spring Awakening received its Scandinavian premiere Aug. 30 at the Värmlands Teatern in Sweden, under the direction of Per Eltvik. Additional stagings of Spring Awakening will bloom at the Helsingin Kaupunginteatteri in Finland on Feb. 5; at the Malmö Opera House in Sweden on March 20; and at the Aalborg Teater in Denmark beginning May 13.
Representatives for the Scandinavian productions state that negotiations are currently underway for the live cast album that will preserve the Värmlands Teatern production. An additional Swedish staging and three Norwegian productions are currently in the works as well.
Spring Awakening arrived on Broadway Nov. 16, 2006, and officially opened Dec. 10. The production recently concluded its Broadway engagement on Jan. 18 at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.
Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik penned the score to the musical with book and lyrics by Steven Sater. The duo earned Tony Awards for their musical, which allowed the repressed teens of Wedekind's work to break free from life in a series of explosive rock songs performed directly to the audience. Songs featured in the Tony-winning score are "All That's Known," "And Then There Were None," "Blue Wind/Don't Do Sadness," "Left Behind," "Mamma Who Bore Me," "My Junk, "The Bitch of Living," "The Dark I Know Well," "The Guilty Ones," "The Song of Purple Summer," "The Word of Your Body," "Those You've Known," "Totally Fucked," "Touch Me," "Whispering" and "The Mirror-Blue Night."
