Liza Minnelli, who opens on Broadway Dec. 8 at the Palace Theatre, will be the subject of an in-depth profile by Cynthia McFadden on ABC TV's popular "20/20" news magazine. Productions sources tell Playbill On-Line that the star of Minnelli on Minnelli will be the sole subject of the McFadden interview. The first Minnelli segment airs Wed., Dec. 8, at 10 PM, immediately after the star's opening night performance on Broadway. Additional material from the same interview will be aired on "20/20 Downtown" the following evening, Dec. 9, also at 10 PM.
As reported earlier, Minnelli on Minnelli, written and directed by Fred Ebb (book writer and lyricist of Chicago), is billed as an evening of "heartfelt tribute" to her father, Vincente Minnelli, a master of movie musicals including "Meet Me in St. Louis," "The Bandwagon, "An American in Paris," "Brigadoon," "Kismet," "Gigi," "Bells Are Ringing" and "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever." The show marks the singer's return to Broadway after Victor/Victoria (1997). The Palace engagement has a special meaning to fans of both Minnelli and her mother, Judy Garland, because Garland reopened the historic vaudeville showplace on Oct. 16, 1953, breaking all attendance records there. She later returned in 1956, and again in 1967 when the theatre season that year opened with her historic comeback.
