On Sept. 30, BBC Radio 2 will broadcast the world premiere public performance of the musical, which was taped live July 12 at London's Mermaid Theatre. That evening featured a cast headed by Stephen Fry, who served as the musical's narrator. Simon Lee directed. The Likes of Us, written 40 years ago, is based on the life of Victorian philanthropist Dr. Thomas Barnardo, "a man who was evangelical, entrepreneurial and philanthropic, and whose crusade to rescue children living on the streets became world renowned."
Together Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote the musicals Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. Lloyd Webber went on to write Cats, By Jeeves, The Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard, The Beautiful Game, Whistle Down the Wind and The Woman in White. Rice's musicals include Chess, King David, Aida, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.
