Antigone, which will be presented in a new translation by TS Eliot prize-winning poet Anne Carson, will transfer to the Barbican Theatre, beginning performances March 4, 2015, prior to an official opening March 5 for a run through March 28, after receiving its world premiere at the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg in February 2015. It will then tour internationally.
The Ninagawa Company will bring Kakka on the Shore, an adpatation of the best-selling novel by Haruki Murakami, to the Barbican May 28-30, adapted for the stage by Frank Galati and translated by Shunsuke Hiratsuka. The cast includes the Japanese Academy-winning star of "The Twilight Samurai" Rie Miyazawa, as well as Naohito Fujiki and Nino Furuhata. It is performed in Japanese with English surtitles.
The Ninagawa Company will also offer the UK premeire of Yukio Ninagawa's production of Hamlet, running May 21-24 in the Barbican Theatre, featuring popular Japanse screen actor Tatsuya Fujiwara in the title role. Fujiwara was first seen on stage at the Barbican in 1997 under the direction of Ningawa, and at the age of 21 he became the youngest actor to play the title role in Hamlet in Japanese theatrical history. The pair now revisit the play to celebrate the director's 80th birthday.
Boy Blue Entertainment, a hip-hop dance company, will present A Night with Boy Blue, running Feb. 27 and 28, featuring choreography by company founders Kenrick 'H2O' Sandy, and music by Michael 'Mikey J' Asante. The new show features over 20 of the company's dancers, some as young as eight years old.
Cheek by Jowl will present Measure for Measure in a modern-dress update, performed in Russian with English surtitles, running April 15-25 in the Silk Street Theatre. Directed by Declan Donnellan and designed by Nick Ormerod, this is the fifth time the company have brought their Russian work to the Barbican.
