Long Wharf artistic director Gordon Edelstein announced five of the seven slated works for the 2006-2007 season at his Connecticut company's home.
"Long Wharf Theatre is bringing to the stage two important world premieres that will begin here and continue to other venues," said Edelstein in a release. "This is an exciting, well-rounded season of humor, romance, and music, filled with expressions of idealism and hope."
The new season for the company will also include Clifford Odets' Rocket to the Moon, David Sedaris' The Santaland Diaries and a new take on Man of La Mancha. Among special events planned for the season will be a return of Langston Hughes' Black Nativity and the Jazz on the Wharf Series. Two mainstage productions — slated to run Jan. 10-Feb. 4, 2007 and May 9-June 3, 2007 — are yet to be announced.
The 2006-2007 season lineup (subject to change) is slated as follows:
Chay Yew directs the world premiere of the story of a widowed father who embarks on one more family road trip with his two sons but gets more than he bargained for. The drama by the playwright of BFE will then play at New York's Public Theater.
Clifford Odets' tale of a woman who finds herself amid a love triangle between her married boss and his elderly father-in-law. Daniel Fish directs.
Joe Mantello's stage adaptation of the David Sedaris-penned Christmas tale comes to the Long Wharf . The story centers on a 33-year-old man who deals with Yuletide shenanigans at Macy's Santaland as a department store elf.
Dale Wasserman, Joe Darion and Mitch Leigh's musical tale of Don Quixote gets "a fresh interpretation" in the tradition of the 2004 season's Guys and Dolls at the hands of director Charles Newell.
Writer-performers David Cale (Floyd and Clea Under the Western Sky) and Dael Orlandersmith (Yellowman) team for this Long Wharf-commissioned world premiere. Edelstein directs the collaboration which features music by Cale.
