News Long Wharf Will Present Double Bill of Fugard's Valley Song and Victory In addition to Athol Fugard's previously announced latest work, Victory, Long Wharf Theatre will also present Fugard's one-act play, Valley Song, as part of the company's 2008-2009 season.

Victory makes its East Coast debut in tandem with Valley Song Jan. 14-Feb. 8, 2009, on Long Wharf's Stage II.

Long Wharf has selected the works to illuminate the changing face of South Africa that Fugard has explored since Sizwe Banzi is Dead made its American premiere at the Connecticut theatre.

In Valley Song, press notes state, "Veronica is caught between her own dreams of a singing career in Johannesburg and her grandfather's deep love for tradition and the 'akkers' he's farmed for their livelihood."

As previously reported, Long Wharf will also stage Victory. "Vicky promises Freddie that robbing her old teacher Lionel's house will go off without a hitch, but when they are caught, the ensuing confrontation ends in tragedy," press notes explain. "The pair's standoff with Lionel - who once employed Vicky's mother as his housekeeper - pits poverty against privilege, youth against experience and Vicky and Lionel's accounts of the past against each other."

Casting and creative duties for Valley Song and Victory will be announced at a later date. For more information visit longwharf.org.

The Long Wharf Theatre is located at 222 Sargent Drive in New Haven, CT.
