The original Broadway production of Chess, featuring Judy Kuhn, Philip Casnoff, and David Carroll, opened on Broadway April 28, 1988, at the Imperial Theatre for a short-lived, two-month run.

The musical features music by ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, and lyrics by Tim Rice. The original 1986 London production of Chess ran for nearly three years in the West End. Despite the brief Broadway run, Chess has amassed a legion of fans who are drawn to its operatic rock score that features such songs as “I Know Him So Well,” “Nobody’s Side,” “Someone Else’s Story,” “Pity the Child,” and “One Night in Bangkok.”

The show was recently revived at the Kennedy Center featuring Tony Award winners Ruthie Ann Miles and Karen Olivo and Tony Award nominees Raúl Esparza and Ramin Karimloo.
