On May 9, 1982, Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston opened their musical Nine at Broadway's 46th Street Theatre. Tommy Tune directed a cast that included Raul Julia and a slew of women, including Karen Akers, Anita Morris, and Liliane Montevecchi. The musical was inspired by the film 8 1/2 by Federico Fellini. Less than a month later, it won the Tony Award.
