Hair originally opened at the New York Shakespeare Festival Public Theater for a limited run of six weeks on October 17, 1967. Featuring a book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot and direction by Tom O'Horgan, it reopened on Broadway at the Biltmore Theatre April 29, 1968, where it ran for 1,742 performances and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical. (A movie version of Hair was released in October 1979.)
Following a 2008 Central Park concert with the Public Theatre, the musical was revived on Broadway in 2009 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The revival, starring Gavin Creel, Will Swenson, Caissie Levy, Sasha Allen, and more, ran for 519 performances, concluding it’s run June 27, 2010. The Diane Paulus-helmed production would go on to earn eight Tony Award nominations including a win for Best Revival of a Musical.
The Public Theater reunited tribe members from the 2008 Central Park presentation and subsequent Broadway revival for a 50th anniversary benefit October 25, 2017.
