Based on the life of 19th century Londoner John Merrick, who was afflicted with a rare skin and bone disease, The Elephant Man came to Broadway April 19, 1979, earning Pomerance the 1979 Tony Award for Best Play. It was revived in 2002 starring Billy Crudup at the Royale Theatre, and was last seen on Broadway in a 2015 revival, starring Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper in the role of John Merrick. The role was originated on Broadway by Philip Anglim, who was followed by late music icon David Bowie, and Star Wars cast member Mark Hamill.
